Water oak (Quercus nigra)
Water oak , also called possum oak or spotted oak, is a medium sized, rapidly growing tree, commonly found along water courses, lowlands, and swamp margins on silty clay and loamy soils. It grows throughout the Coastal Plain and lower Piedmont of North Carolina.

The water oak is used for firewood, cross-ties and poles.

It is widely planted as an ornamental in many southern communities.

Its acorns, most of which drop by December, provide a very valuable food for deer and squirrels.
