Shortleaf pine (Pinus enchinata)- also known as rosemary pine, yellow pine, and old field pine, is widely distributed throughout the south. It occurs in pure or mixed stands from the coastal plain to the uplands and lower mountain slopes. The tree grows 80 to 100 feet in height and 2 to 3 feet in diameter. A long, clear, symmetrical bole; a small, narrow, pyramidal crown; and a huge taproot characterize it. It grows on a variety of sites from dry rocky mountain ridges to sandy loams and silt loams of bottomlands and in old fields. The best shortleaf sites are fine sandy loams or silt loams without a distinct profile but with good internal drainage. These sites are commonly found along floodplains of streams. This species is an important source of timber, producing lumber for construction, millwork, plywood, veneer and other uses. It is also used for poles and pulpwood. Wild turkey, squirrels and some songbirds eat the seeds.
