GREEN ASH (Fraxinus pennsylvanica)- Green ash, which has also been called red ash, swamp ash and water ash, is most widely distributed American ash. It is found throughout North Carolina, and nationally, all over the eastern part of the country from central Canada south to eastern Texas. This ash species is a medium to large tree that grows best on fertile, moist, well-drained soils. However, it also occurs naturally and grows on a range of sites from clay soils subject to frequent flooding and overflow to sandy or silty soils where the amount of available moisture may be limited. It can remain healthy when flooded for up to 40% of the time during its growing season. It has grown well when planted on moist upland soils. Because of its strength, hardness, high shock resistance, and excellent bending qualities, its wood is valuable for use in specialty items such as tool handles and baseball bats. It is adaptable to a wide range of sites, and is relatively free from insects and diseases. Although its seeds are used for food by a number of game and non-game animals and birds, it is not considered a major wildlife food species.
